Meet Eric

Eric is barred in three jurisdictions, Maryland, the District of Columbia and Massachusetts. Having obtained two law degrees, Eric concentrates his practice in domestic relations orders, estate planning, parenting coordination, and child custody disputes. Eric’s deep knowledge of issues related to state and federal taxation, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, healthcare, division of retirement assets, and family law, provides him with unparalleled insight on complex financial cases and estate planning. Eric often helps high net-worth individuals secure out-of-court settlements, mutually beneficial to all parties involved.

Eric is frequently asked to speak on the topic of domestic relations orders for private law firms and local bar associations. Eric is an expert in the area of Qualified Domestic Relations Orders, and prepares these documents for Firms and clients throughout the country.

Eric believes in family, hard-work, commitment and accountability. If he’s not working, you’ll find him with his two sons, his dogs and his wife and law partner, Laura. His hobbies include working on his antique Boston Whaler and home remodeling.

Domestic cases require an advisor you can trust, confide in, and collaborate with. Eric is that person for all his clients. Eric puts children first, and removes them at all times from the conflict that may arise in a domestic situation. Eric is the person you want guiding you and on your team.

Meet Laura

Laura is a native of Atlanta, Georgia and earned her undergraduate degree from Emory University. She earned her law degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Laura and her husband, Eric Haviland, have been working together for a decade, and are the co-founders of Burrows Haviland Law.

During the Global Pandemic, with major delays in family cases, Laura recognized the need to train and coach other family law professionals, parents, and the Judiciary, in Parenting Coordination. Laura is passionate about learning and teaching the ways in which trauma impacts the parents and children of separation and divorce. She believes that Courts are not equipped to provide support and education to struggling parents, and is committed to improving the use of alternative dispute resolution and trauma informed processes for families. Laura has presented nationally, and internationally, in the areas of Family Law, including representing children, and Parenting Coordination.

Laura began her career, and made her reputation as a trial attorney in high-conflict divorce and custody matters. In 2022 Laura represented grandparents in a published case (Basciano v. Foster) involving de facto parenthood. She has successfully tried cases throughout Maryland involving drug and alcohol use disorders, domestic violence, child abuse, restrictive gate-keeping, parental contact failure, relocation, de facto parents, adult destitute children, children with special needs and learning differences, child support, rehabilitative and permanent alimony, business valuations, high net-worth cases, and more. Laura has advanced training and certifications in Parenting Coordination, Representing Children, Divorce mediation, Child Access Mediation, and Collaborative Law. She has been recognized by Super Lawyers for 11 years and was recently named to The 2022 Power List in family law, by The Daily Record. She was recently recognized by What’s Up Magazine in Annapolis, MD. Laura is an active Board Member on the Maryland Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (“AFCC”). Her passion is advocating for children by supporting parents of separation and divorce to identify and develop creative actionable resolutions to their disputes in a non-judgmental and supportive process.

At this time, Laura is not taking new litigation cases, and is focusing on helping families as a parenting coordinator and mediator. Laura is a privately appointed and Court-Appointed Parenting Coordinator pursuant to Maryland Rule 9-205.2. Laura continues to work as a Court-Appointed child’s attorney. Laura offers individual mediation as well as co-mediation services with Eric. If your family is in conflict, Laura will use her knowledge, experience, skills, and compassion to support you in writing a healthy divorce/separation story, minimizing trauma for generations to come.
